What’s changing with my Macquarie credit card travel insurance?

From Wednesday 18 June 2025, the Macquarie Black Credit Card Insurance Terms and Conditions and the Macquarie Platinum Credit Card Insurance Terms and Conditions will be updated. This means that these updated Terms and Conditions will apply to events that occur from 18 June 2025.

You can find the new Terms and Conditions here:

We have summarised the key changes for you below.

When we state ‘you/your’, we mean the ‘Covered Person’ under the Terms and Conditions.

Changes relating to COVID-19

COVID-19 will be treated in the same way as any other Illness. This means, where there is coverage for illness-related events, it will apply to COVID-19.

You won’t be covered for losses or costs incurred because of:

  • border closures or government issued ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings arising from COVID-19;
  • any delay or cancellation of a scheduled flight due to COVID-19; and
  • mandatory quarantine, except when you have a valid claim under Event 1 of the Trip Cancellation and Amendment Cover.

Changes that impact you while travelling

CoverWhat's changing?
General exclusion (applies to all cover)
  • If you pay for your overseas or domestic return trip using Qantas Points or Jetstar vouchers on or after 18 June 2025, you will not be covered.
  • Excluded sports and activities will also include four-wheel driving adventures, ultra-marathon, biathlon and triathlon race events.
  • Exclusions that apply to riding a motorcycle will also apply to riding a scooter.
  • Losses or costs won’t be covered for air travel for business purposes on a non-scheduled flight (e.g. a private jet). A definition for ‘non-scheduled flight’ will also be added.
Trip Cancellation and Amendment Cover
  • Trip cancellation, curtailment or change due to a border closure, or a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning, for your planned destination, will only be covered if caused by a natural disaster.
  • Trip cancellation or curtailment due to a natural disaster impacting your residential home in Australia will only be covered if an official warning is issued by an Australian government agency.
Accidental Death Cover
  • The end date for this cover will no longer be automatically extended beyond your return date if you are hospitalised while on an overseas trip.
Public Transport Accident Cover
  • Accidental death or permanent disablement from being hit by public transport will no longer be covered.
  • If a covered person disappears on public transport,  reasonable evidence must be given that the covered person’s body was not found within 12 months of the date of disappearance.
Personal Liability Cover
  • You will no longer be covered for liability from negligent supervision of a minor, acts done by a minor, or for any criminal proceedings taken against you, even if you are not convicted.
Personal Baggage, Valuables, Money and Travel Documents Cover
  • Ceramics will no longer be covered

Changes that impact you when renting a car

We’re updating the Rental Vehicle Excess Cover to clarify that the cover:

  • only applies to the excess you owe under your rental vehicle insurance for damage or theft of your rental car; and
  • does not apply to damage to your rental car which is excluded from your rental vehicle insurance or damage to third-party vehicles or persons.

Other changes that may impact you

  • A dependent child will no longer be required to be unmarried or living at home to be eligible as a Covered Person.
  • You won’t be covered at all for any unlawful act committed by you, or if you’ve consumed alcohol with any drug or medication.
  • We’re clarifying that Immovable fixtures and fittings (e.g. integrated stove tops) purchased with your Macquarie credit card are not covered by the Card Purchase Cover or the Buyer’s Advantage Cover.
  • The ‘How do I make a claim’ section will be updated to:
    • require you to tell Chubb if you’ve made a claim or have any other insurance policy that might cover your loss; and
    • let you know how long it will take for Chubb to review your claim.
  • In addition to the changes we’ve summarised in this article, the new Terms and Conditions will have clearer wording, formatting changes and updated definitions to make it easier to understand.
