DEFT tax invoice

You’ll receive a DEFT invoice from us each month if you were charged any fees or if we’ve collected fees from your payers on your behalf.

The fees on your DEFT invoice have already been paid so there’s no action required from you.

Here’s a quick guide on how to read your invoice:

1. Your business information

Your business details and ABN as per your account with Macquarie

2. Your account information

The account name and account number that the DEFT fees are debited from. If fees are being redirected, these account details will differ from the account that receives DEFT payments.

Your invoice includes all accounts under your DEFT facility. If fees are being redirected from multiple DEFT accounts, then the fees account will be repeated for each DEFT account.

3. Description of supply

This is the account number that receives DEFT payments. If fees are being redirected, this account number will differ from the account to which fees are charged.

This description will match the debit transaction on your bank statement.

4. Fee type

DEFT fees may be:

  • Fixed: a fixed amount per transaction, or
  • Variable: a percentage of the transaction value.

For more information on transactions which attract DEFT fees, refer to Clause 8 of the DEFT Biller Agency Agreement.

5. Payment method

This shows how your payers chose to pay when using DEFT.

6. Biller fee

This column lists the fees and charges paid by your business directly. The total is debited at the end of the invoice period month from your nominated fee account.

7. Payer fee

This column lists the fees and charges we collect from your payers on your behalf. Unlike the biller fees, these are not deducted from your account as they’ve already been paid by your payers. The payer fees are displayed on your invoice to provide visibility for accounting and tax purposes, for example if your payers request an invoice from you for any fees we’ve collected from them on your behalf.

8. Average Cost of Card Acceptance

This shows the cost of card payments as required by the RBA Surcharging Standard.

9. Adjustment Note

Your invoice will include an Adjustment Note for GST purposes if any payer fees were refunded on your behalf in the previous month. You should seek independent accounting, tax or other professional advice on whether there’s a corresponding GST adjustment between yourself and the payer.

Please note: this guide may not be relevant for backdated invoice requests or invoices issued prior to May 2023.
