Remove a trustee when a minor turns the age of 18

When a minor reaches the age of 18, it isn’t mandatory to remove the trustee from the account or to change the account name.

Instructions to amend the account must always come from the trustee/s. When a minor has reached the age of 18, there are three (3) options:

  1. No change. There is no change in the relationship upon the child turning 18 and the account remains as a trust account. The TFN continues to be that of the trustee OR,
  2. The trustee may advise us that the trust is to be terminated and legal ownership of the account is to be transferred from the trustee to the former minor. In this case, the following documentation is required:
    • a signed letter by the current trustee/trustees
    • a Macquarie Third Party Authority form signed by the beneficial owner (formerly the minor)
    • proof of age, such as a copy of a birth certificate or driver's license; and
    • AML identification and CRS requirements for the new account holder (former minor) and any additional signatories
    • a new TFN for the account (if not provided, withholding tax will be charged).
  3. The trustee leaves the account name as it is, with the trustee holding the account in trust for the former minor but gives them signing authority on the account. The following documentation is required:
    • a copy of the former minor's birth certificate, if not already held. Birth certificates were not originally requested on older accounts.
    • a Macquarie Third Party Authority form
    • AML identification and CRS requirements for the former minor.

Note: The TFN will remain as the trustee’s.
