What to look out for

The most common scams share some key characteristics. When it comes to protecting yourself from scams, it’s important to be vigilant around providing personal information or making payments to an account.

Characteristics of a scam can often include:

  1. You’re contacted out of the blue
  2. There’s a sense of urgency to act quickly
  3. It sounds too good to be true.

If you’re being offered a product or investment at a much lower price than normal or promised a return much larger than what you might get from the bank, it could be a scam. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Scammers rely on building trust with their victims before exploiting this relationship for financial gain. Ask yourself if you really know the person you’re talking to.

Received a suspicious phone call

Fraudsters and scammers may attempt to compromise your personal and financial information by pretending to be your bank, or other trusted company. If you receive a call from us and you’re not sure that you’re talking to a Macquarie staff member, ask the caller for a reference number and tell them you’ll call back.

You can find our contact numbers listed on our websites, on your bank statements, or you could call your relationship manager directly.

Received a suspicious email

We’ll never ask you to provide personal or financial information over email. If you receive an email that looks like it came from us asking you to verify your details, or log into a website, let us know. Send a copy of the email to scams@macquarie.com and then delete the email.

Think twice before you act. Were you expecting this email? Take a second, breathe, and think. If in doubt, don’t act.

If you think that you’ve provided details in a phishing email or have clicked on any links, let us know by calling us. If you have shared your login details, change your password immediately, and give us a call on 1800 620 673 (+61 2 8550 5603 if calling from overseas).

I think I might have been scammed. What should I do?

If you suspect you may have fallen for a scam, you should cease all contact with the party you’ve been communicating with.

You should get in contact with the police to report the matter, as well as your bank to assist you.

To report a scam to us, please call 1800 620 673 (+61 2 8550 5603 if calling from overseas).
