Fraud education for schools

28 February 2005

Tomorrow's leaders will meet today's leaders at a Macquarie Bank book launch.

On Monday 28th February, Fraud Busters: Personal stories of fighting fraud from Australian experts will be launched by Alan Jones at Macquarie Bank, Sydney. The book is the brain-child of Bill Moss, Head of Macquarie Bank's Banking and Property Group.

"This book grew out of a series of seminars on fraud that I initiated as a way to start debate on this serious topic," said Mr Moss.

"I have been defrauded, so like the other contributors to this book, my contribution has been an intensely personal experience".

"After discussions with the Secondary Principal's Association, we've decided to send a copy of Fraud Busters to every school with students in years eleven and twelve in Australia" said Bill Moss.

Senior students will be invited to attend the launch after reading the book, to ask questions and offer opinions.

"If we are taught to be street smart early in life, we carry it with us through life, hopefully making good decisions and staying one step ahead of the fraudsters", said Bill Moss.

Said St Aloysius' College School Captain, Matthew Walker, one of the students attending the launch: "This book describes a lot of personal experiences from top Australian experts. Good on Mr. Moss for talking so honestly about his experience of being defrauded. For students like us to hear how people have dealt with difficult situations, is a great way to learn."

"This takes the debate on fraud to a new generation" said Bill Moss.

Ted Brierley, President of the Secondary Principals Association said, "For all the talk about financial literacy, there is almost no material in schools about it. This is a valuable school asset because Australia's foremost authorities talk passionately about how we all should be aware of the lengths to which fraudsters will go."

The book's contributors include:

  • Paul Clitheroe, Media commentator and speaker, and founding director of IPAC Securities, one of Australia and New Zealand's best known research and investment houses
  • John Symond, The face of Aussie Home Loans
  • Megan McGowan, former head of the NSW Fraud Squad
  • Stephen Van Eyk, Managing Director of van Eyk Research, the dominant research provider in the financial services industry who blew the whistle on Estate Mortgages
  • Denise Brailey, Australia's answer to Erin Brokovich, President of Real Estate Consumers Association Inc (RECA)

Added Bill Moss: "Fighting fraud has to start in the schools. The nine high profile Australians who have shared their story in Fraud Busters help to give valuable lessons in life."

Fraud Busters can be purchased from a variety of book and department stores including Dymocks, Angus & Robertson, Borders, Myers, Big W, Newslink plus other independent store at a RRP of $19.95.
